Facing unexpected change. This post continues my reflections on navigating life’s transitions. You can read the earlier reflections. The Start You Didn’t Imagine: Beginnings Don’t Determine Endings and When Life Doesn’t Go As Planned
Every unexpected challenge, setback, or obstacle is a moment that can define you, or you can define the moment. Life doesn’t send us emails, text messages, or phone calls to warn us when our lives will be interrupted by a sudden change— a health diagnosis, being told you no longer have a job, or having to move to a different city to care for a loved one.
When Life Changes Without Warning
These moments can feel overwhelming and out of our control. But even in these situations, we have a choice in how we respond. We can let the moment define us, or we can choose to define the moment. How we choose to respond is shaped by what we believe about ourselves.
The Power of Our Beliefs
Our past failures, fears, and ability to manage unexpected change shape our belief in what we can or cannot overcome. I love this Zig Ziglar quote. It reminds us of the power of our response: “Other people and things can stop you temporarily. You’re the only one who can do it permanently.” One of the most powerful mindset shifts we can make is to confront the limiting beliefs that define what we believe we are capable of.
Challenging Limiting Beliefs
When we choose discomfort over comfort, growth over panic, and responding with faith and intention rather than fear and hopelessness, we challenge our limiting beliefs and expand what we believe is possible.
Beliefs Shape Our Thoughts, Actions, and Choices
By becoming aware of how our beliefs influence every area of our lives, shaping our thoughts, actions, and choices, we can take the first step toward changing them. Our beliefs about ourselves can empower us to do and achieve more than we ever imagined.
